Finding the way in a life full of waves

I am excited to become a therapist. It is what I always wanted to be when I grew up. Actually, that is not really true at all. My path to becoming a therapist has been anything but straight. I grew up wanting to be a MLB baseball player. But then I realized that I wasn’t even the best player at my high school and hated practicing, so I decided I would be a hedge fund manager who would become wealthy enough to start a non-profit to help those in need of money or resources. But then I realized I had little interest in working in...

I have an awful habit of hitting the snooze button. I usually snooze my alarm three or four times before I actually get out of bed. No matter how determined I am the night before to wake up on time, I lack any willpower to do so the next morning. Instead, I sleep in whenever I have the chance. While sleep is certainly important and always been a priority of mine, it probably isn’t the most productive for me to be watching YouTube videos and scrolling social media until 1am and rolling out of bed at 10:30 for class.

However, whil...

In my last post, I talked about how it is ok to not be ok and the idea that we are all going through something whether others know about it or not. Not only is this important to acknowledge about your own life, but also about the lives of others as well. In psychology, there is something called attribution bias. It is basically the idea that when others fail, we blame them personally for their failures. But, when we fail, we attribute our failures to others, the environment, or any external factor we can think of. In other word...

Everyone is going through something that we can’t see. Wise words from Kevin Love. If you don’t know him, Kevin Love is an NBA All-Star advocating for mental health awareness ever since he suffered a panic attack due to anxiety during a game. He wrote an awesome article detailing his personal struggles and how opening up to others and asking for help changed his life after running from his problems for his whole life.

As a NBA player making millions simply to play basketball, Kevin saw no logical reason to have any worries in li...

Be grateful. Wise words from DJ Khaled. And now from me. Too often, we focus on what is wrong with our lives. We concentrate on the negatives. On what we need to “fix” or change in order to be happy. I’m not making enough money. I’m single. I hate my clothing. I hate my body. I don’t have any friends. I have a pimple on my forehead. I spilled coffee on my new pants. I don’t have straight A’s. I don’t like my co-workers. I’m not rich and famous and living in Hawaii.

Now, I am not here to dismiss any and all problems you face. It...

Long-distance sucks. Let’s get that out of the way. Being hours away from your significant other, who I would hope you want to be with all the time, is not fun. I am currently in a long-distance relationship, going to grad school in California while my girlfriend works in New Jersey. We’ve only been this far apart for a month, yet it has been one of the hardest and longest of my life, especially knowing we’ll be doing distance for at least two more years.

But let’s not focus on that. If you’ve ever been in a long-distance relati...

I’ve never really had to worry about money. Sure, I’ve had jobs and personal expenses, but my parents have always helped me out with major costs. So, I am definitely speaking from a privileged perspective when it comes to money. However, I still think about money a lot, especially when it comes to my future. I am set to start my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy in September, and while I’m excited to be helping people for a career, therapists do not make much money (the average is around $40,000/year). Thankfully, my mom...
